Pleasants County

Pleasants County was formed on March 29, 1851, from portions of Wood, Tyler, and Ritchie counties. It was named for James Pleasants Jr., a U.S. senator and governor of Virginia. Located along the Ohio River, the county developed around river trade, agriculture, and later natural gas and oil production. St. Marys, the county seat, was incorporated in 1851 and became known for its unique railroad line that runs directly through the middle of town. The county’s riverfront location shaped its economic and cultural development throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
