Greenbrier County

Greenbrier County, created on March 1, 1778, is one of the state’s oldest counties. Named for the Greenbrier River, it was settled by Europeans beginning in the mid‑1700s, with early frontier forts such as Fort Savannah and Fort Donnally playing key roles in conflicts with Native American groups. Lewisburg, the county seat, was established in 1782 and became a cultural and educational center. The county saw Civil War action, including the Battle of Lewisburg in 1862. The Greenbrier resort at White Sulphur Springs, dating to the late 1700s, became one of America’s most famous historic hotels.
