Marion County

Marion County was formed on January 14, 1842, from Harrison and Monongalia counties and named for Revolutionary War hero General Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox.” Fairmont, the county seat, was established in 1820 and became an important industrial center with the rise of coal mining, glassmaking, and railroads. The county played a role in the early history of West Virginia University and was home to significant Civil War activity, including the destruction of bridges by Confederate raiders. In the 20th century, Marion County continued to develop as part of the north‑central West Virginia economic region.
